Porsche has once again proved that electric cars can not only be environmentally friendly, but also capable of spectacular achievements. On 14 January 2025, Porsche Experience instructor Jens Richter set a new Guinness World Record for the longest continuous drift on ice among electric cars at the wheel of a standard Taycan GTS. On the track in Lapland, he completed 132 laps, covering 17.503 kilometres in a controlled skid.

Here's What We Know

The first attempt had to be aborted due to the deteriorating condition of the ice track after 11 kilometres of drifting. The team then switched to tyres with shortened studs and waited for the air temperature to drop overnight, which allowed them to successfully complete the second attempt. The previous record of 14.809 kilometres was significantly surpassed.

The record was set on the Porsche Arctic Centre ice track in Levi, Finland, about 150 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. A 59-metre diameter drift circle was created for the attempt, and the Taycan GTS was fitted with standard Michelin tyres with one-millimetre studs. All data was recorded using a professional GPS device that recorded not only the distance travelled, but also the driver's actions and the overloads applied to the car.

The Taycan GTS is an all-wheel drive version of the electric model. The powertrain output is 445 kW (605 hp) and reaches 515 kW (700 Nm) with Launch Control activated. The maximum torque with Launch Control is 790 Nm. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 3.3 seconds and the top speed is limited at 250 km/h. The range on the WLTP cycle is 552 kilometres.
