Google has announced a new policy for the Chrome browser, according to which synchronisation will be disabled for users who have not updated the browser for several years.
Here's What We Know
According to Google, from the beginning of 2025, Chrome synchronisation will be stopped on older versions of the browser. We are talking about versions older than four years.
Users of such versions will receive a message asking them to update their browser to "start syncing" or "continue using Chrome data in your Google account".
Google explains:
"Starting in early 2025, Chrome sync (using and saving data to your Google account) will stop working on versions of Chrome older than four years. If you are using an older version of the browser, you may see an error message: "Update Chrome to start syncing" or "Update Chrome to continue using your Chrome data with your Google account".
Chrome updates are enabled by default and applied when you restart your browser. Therefore, for most users, this change will not have a major impact. Problems may arise only for those who have disabled automatic updates or are using an outdated operating system, which leads to the use of an older version of Chrome. For example, Windows 7, which was discontinued by Microsoft in 2020, can still update to Chrome version 109 in 2023. This gives users two more years before syncing becomes unavailable.
