The latest Need for Speed title Unbound was released in December 2022 and received mixed reviews from critics and gamers. It was developed by Criterion Games studio, which after the release of the race became one of the four teams involved in the creation of the new Battlefield part.

Many fans decided that such a decision by Electronic Arts is an unspoken refusal from further development of Need for Speed, but this is not the case.

Here's What We Know

Electronic Arts Vice President Vince Zampella explained in an interview with Eurogamer that the company is not going to give up on Need for Speed, and the involvement of Criterion Games on Battlefield allows not only to speed up the release of the shooter, but also gives time to the British studio to analyse the wishes of players and make the next part of the cult racing franchise of the highest quality and meet the demands of the public.

It was important for us as a company to spend the last year listening to the Need for Speed community and utilising their feedback when creating content for Unbound. With a deeper understanding of what our players want from Need for Speed, we plan to give back to the franchise in new and exciting ways.

Unconfirmed information suggests that a new Battlefield installment will be released in Autumn 2025, with development on a new Need for Speed likely to start shortly after.
