Former PlayStation executive Sean Layden has suggested that Sony is unlikely to completely abandon the use of disc drives in the upcoming PlayStation 6. He noted that although digital sales are growing, physical media remains important for many users, especially in regions with weak Internet connections.

Here's What We Know

Leyden emphasised that Sony is officially represented in 170 countries, and the company must take into account the needs of different users. He cited the example of rural Italy, where stable internet is still a problem, making it difficult to distribute exclusively digital consoles. In addition, he mentioned users who do not have access to the Internet for a long time, such as the military or athletes during competitions, for whom physical copies of games are indispensable.

Leyden also noted that Microsoft was able to go digital faster because its main markets - the US, UK, and Australia - have stable internet connections. Sony, on the other hand, has to take into account the global situation, which makes a complete transition to digital media more difficult.
