The Taiwanese army officially began training with the first batch of M1A2T Abrams main battle tanks that arrived from the United States in December 2024.

Here's What We Know

Taiwanese instructors, who were trained in the US and returned in November, have begun classroom training to familiarise the military with the new armoured vehicles. Soldiers who previously operated outdated US tanks are being retrained, focusing on Abrams performance, maintenance and safety protocols.

If training goes smoothly, combat training for the third generation tanks could begin in the second half of 2025.

To improve training, a test site is also being built in Kengzikou, Xinzhou County. The complex will include a multi-purpose shooting range for night and driving training, new automated target platforms, and a 1.8 km range for testing weapons systems. However, the exact timeframe for the range's readiness is not yet known.
