The US Navy conducted tests of the HELIOS shipboard laser system, during which the USS Preble destroyed a drone.

Here's What We Know

The tests took place on the Arleigh Burke destroyer USS Preble: the HELIOS laser system was installed on the bow of the ship. According to available data, the system successfully hit an air target in sea conditions.

HELIOS is the first laser system to be integrated into the Aegis combat system. It is capable of both destroying targets and blinding enemy optical systems. Its power exceeds 60 kW, which allows it to effectively engage drones and small surface targets. In addition, the system can conduct surveillance over long distances.

The USS Preble (DDG-88) is the first and so far the only ship to be fitted with the HELIOS system, which replaced the Phalanx bow anti-aircraft gun system.

The laser is being developed by Lockheed Martin, which received its first contract from the US Navy in 2018. The US Department of Defence is actively working on laser systems to improve the ability of warships to withstand the massive use of drones.

Laser weapons have advantages over anti-aircraft missile systems due to their significantly lower cost per shot, no need for ammunition, and the ability to be used for a long time without reloading.
