The popularity of the Toyota RAV4 seems to know no bounds. New data from analyst firm JATO Dynamics shows that this vehicle has surpassed the Ford F-150 in terms of registrations in the US in 2024.

Here's What We Know

This leadership change is historic, as the F-150 has topped the list of new car registrations in America for many years. The last time it dropped to second place was in 2009, when the Camry overtook it, according to JATO data. The RAV4's marked increase in 2024 sales, combined with a slight decline in F-150 sales, pushed the Toyota model into the top spot for the first time in years.

It's important to note that Jato's data, differs from how sales are reported by manufacturers. For example, Ford counts the results of all F-Series models as one in its reports. Jato. in turn, gives separate statistics for the F-150 and Super Duty versions (F-250, F-350, etc.). When directly comparing the F-150 to the RAV4, Toyota wins by a difference of 14,278 vehicles: 460,915 for the F-150 and 475,193 for the RAV4.

Predictably, this changes the top ten most popular models in the U.S. a bit, as JATO applies the same logic of separating light and heavy models to all pickup trucks. As a result, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 drops to fifth on the list, the GMC Sierra 1500 drops to tenth, and the Ram 1500 drops out of the top ten altogether.

JATO provides data not only for individual vehicles, but also for brands as a whole, and found that Toyota is back in the lead, with Ford following close behind. Honda showed the biggest market share gains in 2024, while Ram suffered the most, consistent with Stellantis being the biggest market share "loser" among all major automotive groups in 2024.
