Mercedes-Benz is recalling 7,362 EQB electric crossovers in the U.S. due to high-voltage batteries that can fail and catch fire.

Here's What We Know

Affected by the service campaign are:

  • Mercedes-Benz EQB 250 2022-2024 (2,626 units),
  • Mercedes-Benz EQB 300 4Matic 2022-2024 (3311 units).
  • Mercedes-Benz EQB 350 4Matic 2022-2024 (1,415 units).

According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), due to a combination of certain vehicle manufacturing and operating conditions, a short circuit may occur in the high-voltage unit. Mercedes-Benz cited "variations" in the early production phase at the supplier in combination with localised external factors such as the frequency of the electric current in the charging infrastructure or potential mechanical damage to the high-voltage battery.

The batteries were manufactured by Farasis Energy in China. While no fires have been reported in the U.S., the NHTSA report mentions information about battery fires in other countries. After investigating these incidents, Mercedes-Benz has not identified the root cause of the problem or any specific combination of factors that could have led to the battery fire. The company has announced a global recall for safety reasons.

To fix the potential problem, specialists at Mercedes-Benz dealer service centres will update the vehicles' software. Until that is done, owners of these electric cars are advised to charge the battery to no more than 80 per cent.
