Ilon Musk, the famous entrepreneur and founder of Tesla and SpaceX, has made a surprise offer to buy OpenAI through a consortium of investors.

Here's What We Know

According to the Wall Street Journal, Musk offered $97.4 billion for control of the non-profit organisation that runs OpenAI. In response to Musk's offer, Altman replied, "No thanks, but we'll buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if you want." Musk, in turn, called Altman a "fraud."

Musk's move is part of his long-running standoff with Altman, which began after Musk left OpenAI's board of directors in 2018. Musk argues that OpenAI should remain a non-profit organisation focused on security and openness, while Altman seeks to transform the company into a for-profit entity.
