Sony has published its financial results for the third quarter of fiscal year 2025, where it reported that shipments of PlayStation 5 consoles reached 75 million units. That is, 9.5 million devices were shipped in the period from October to December 2024, which is a significant increase.

Here's What We Know

Software sales for both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 also increased, reaching 95.9 million units - up 6.2 million year-on-year. However, sales of games from independent developers declined to 16.2 million units, down 4.6 million units year-on-year. Digital downloads of full versions of games accounted for 74% of total sales, although this figure was down three per cent.

The decline in first-party game sales is consistent with the success of major third-party releases such as Black Myth: Wukong and the Silent Hill 2 remake, which dominated the PlayStation 5 lineup in the second half of 2024.

Sony also reported 129 million monthly active users on the PlayStation Network, up from 123 million in the previous fiscal year.
