Android 16 beta adds HEIC support and exposure adjustments
Google has released the second beta version of Android 16, which brings new features for photographers. The update is already available for owners of Pixel 9 Pro and other modern Google smartphones.
Here's What We Know
The final version of Android 16 is expected to be released in the second quarter of 2025, but in the meantime, users can test the new camera features in the beta version. The main update concerns saving photos in HEIC format with Ultra-HDR support. This format is more efficient and takes up less space on the device.
Another important change is the ability to adjust the exposure in automatic mode. Now users can change parameters such as sensor sensitivity and shutter speed, leaving the rest of the settings to the automation. This allows for more precise shot adjustment without having to switch to fully manual mode.

In addition, the white balance adjustment has been improved. In addition to the standard colour temperature setting, you can now add a tint to help compensate for difficult or bright lighting and create unique effects. This is especially useful for JPEGs, where the white balance cannot be changed after the photo is taken.
Another innovation is the ability to open Google Wallet by double-clicking the power button. Previously, this action only opened the camera, but now users have an alternative option for quick access to the wallet.
The Android 16 beta is compatible with most modern Google devices, including Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 8a, Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel Tablet. You can register for the test on the official Google website, but it is recommended to make a full backup of your device before installation.
