Protector RG1 multi-purpose drone successfully tested in the UK
The country has conducted flight tests of the Protector RG1 UAV, which will replace the MQ-9 Reaper in the Royal Air Force.
Here's What We Know
The test was a key stage in the third phase of the drone's evaluation. Unlike its predecessor, the Protector RG1 can perform both military and civilian tasks.
The first drone of this type was delivered to the British Air Force at the end of October 2023. In total, the Ministry of Defence has ordered 16 of these drones to gradually replace 10 MQ-9A Reapers.

The Protector RG1 is based on the MQ-9B SkyGuardian and is equipped with an integrated weapon system from BAE Systems that allows the use of Paveway IV precision-guided bombs and Brimstone 2 multi-role missiles.
The remaining 15 drones will be delivered by General Atomics in stages, with delivery expected to be completed by the end of 2025. The MQ-9B has a wingspan of 24 metres, increased range and flight time, and can stay in the air for 40 hours.

Among its features are a high-resolution EO/IR Full Motion Video sensor, an anti-icing system and automatic take-off and landing. The upgraded ground control station is designed for a crew of four.
The strike version of the MQ-9 is equipped with weapon carriers, including AGM-114 Hellfire anti-tank missiles, Mark 82 corrected bombs and other weapons.
