The German company Helsing has announced a new order for 6,000 HX-2 kamikaze drones for Ukraine. Previously, it had already supplied simpler HF-1 barrage munitions under a contract for 4,000 units.

Here's What We Know

Helsing introduced the HX-2 at the end of 2024. The drone has X-shaped wings and tail fin - something similar to the Russian Lancet. However, its main advantage is its advanced software, including machine vision and robust communication systems, which make it less vulnerable to electronic warfare.

Thanks to the Helsing Altra software, several HX-2s can operate in a flock under the control of a single operator, taking turns attacking a target. The drone has several warheads, including a well-known cumulative warhead designed to destroy armoured vehicles.

It has a total weight of 12 kg, which is the same as the Lancet, and probably a similar weight of the warhead (up to 3 kg). The HX-2 has a top speed of 220 km/h, while the Lancet has a top speed of up to 300 km/h, but their cruising speed is almost the same.

The main advantage of the HX-2 is its range of 100 km, compared to the Lancet's 40-60 km. This makes it possible to destroy enemy long-range artillery from a safe distance.

Helsing has opened a new plant in Germany that will produce up to 1000 HX-2s per month. The manufacturer positions the drone as adapted for mass production at reduced costs, although its exact cost has not been disclosed.
