Indonesia orders attack drones from Turkey to be manufactured at a joint venture
Indonesia has ordered more than 60 Bayraktar TB3 reconnaissance and strike drones from the Turkish company Baykar, which will be manufactured at a new joint venture.
Here's What We Know
On 12 February, Baykar Technologies signed an agreement with Indonesia's PT Republikorp to establish a joint venture for the production of drones. The company will produce 60 medium-altitude Bayraktar TB3 drones and 9 high-altitude Akinci drones. Baykar will transfer technology, while Republikorp will provide certification and infrastructure.
The agreement was signed by Baykar CEO Haluk Bayraktar and PT Republikorp Chairman Norman Joseph in the presence of the two presidents.
These drones are likely to be used by the Indonesian Navy to patrol the coastline and waters. The country has already purchased 12 Anka drones from Turkish Aerospace in 2023.
Defence cooperation between Indonesia and Turkey has been actively developing in recent years: Turkey has signed agreements for the construction of two corvettes, and also supplies Indonesia with Kaplan MT (Harimau) medium tanks and tracked armoured personnel carriers.
The future facility in Indonesia will be Baykar's next overseas production site. The company is already expanding production in Morocco and is building a plant in Ukraine that will be able to produce up to 120 drones a year. It is expected to be completed in August 2025. Baykar has also negotiated the opening of production facilities in Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan in the past years.
