On 11 February 2025, Elon Musk made an offer to buy OpenAI.

He was ready to pay $97.4 billion for the leading AI developer, but OpenAI founder Sam Altman immediately rejected the idea and half-jokingly offered to buy social network X from Musk for $9.74 billion (exactly 10 times less than the amount offered to him by Musk).

Now there is an official response from the OpenAI management.

Here's What We Know

OpenAI's board of directors unanimously turned down Ilon Musk and his partners.

OpenAI board chairman Bret Taylor issued this message:

OpenAI is not for sale, and the board has unanimously rejected Mr Musk's latest attempt to thwart his competitors. Any potential reorganisation of OpenAI should only strengthen our non-profit organisation and its mission to ensure that AGI benefits all of humanity.

However, as The Verge notes, Musk's proposal could make it much more difficult for OpenAI to transition to a for-profit organisation - which is exactly what the billionaire is unwilling to allow.
