iPhone 17 Pro may get aluminium bezels instead of titanium
In recent years, Apple has been changing the materials of its premium iPhone frames. At first, the company used aluminium, then switched to stainless steel, and later to titanium. Now, according to reports, Apple plans to return to aluminium frames for three of the four iPhone 17 models.
Here's What We Know
In a note to investors obtained by MacRumors, analyst Jeff Pugh said that the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max models will have aluminium frames. The iPhone 17 Air, he said, will have a titanium frame.
This will be a notable change for the Pro models, as the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro all have titanium frames, making them lighter than the heavier stainless steel frames in the iPhone 14 Pro.
Jeff Puch noted that Apple chose aluminium for the iPhone 17 Pro models for environmental reasons. Aluminium has a lower carbon footprint than titanium, and the company aims to achieve carbon neutrality for all its products and supply chain by 2030. This means that some iPhone 17 models could become the first generation of Apple iPhones that do not harm the environment, just like the Apple Watch and the new Mac mini.
Last year, analyst Ming-Chi Ku noted that the iPhone 17 Air's frame would use a mixture of titanium and aluminium, with less titanium than in the iPhone 15 Pro models. Apple certainly has its reasons, so let's hope to learn more details before the iPhone 17 series presentation in September.
