Ukrainian military defeat North Korean M1989 Koksan self-propelled artillery system for the first time
Soldiers of the 412th NEMESIS Regiment of the Unmanned Systems Forces of Ukraine in Luhansk region hit a North Korean 170mm M1989 Koksan self-propelled artillery system for the first time.
Here's What We Know
The attack took place with the help of a night bomber drone. The regiment's press service posted the video on Telegram. This is the first recorded case of the destruction of a self-propelled artillery system of this type during the Russian-Ukrainian war.
It is worth noting that the movement of trains with North Korean M1989 Koksan through Russia was recorded in November and December 2024. In January 2025, these systems were first spotted directly at the frontline at the disposal of Russian troops.
The M1989 Koksan is a 40-tonne self-propelled artillery system that was first demonstrated at a parade in the city of Koksan in 1989. It uses a rare 170mm calibre, and its long-barreled gun provides a range of up to 40km with conventional shells and up to 60km with rocket-propelled munitions. The likely rate of fire is 1-2 rounds every 5 minutes.
