The United Kingdom may send Typhoon fighter jets to Ukraine as part of a peacekeeping force to patrol its airspace.

Here's What We Know

British ministers are discussing this option as an alternative to a large-scale deployment of peacekeeping forces. The mission could resemble the operation in the Baltic States, where British aircraft escort Russian aircraft and respond to potential threats.

According to The Times, the plan would require a significant number of aircraft and air defence systems. Around a dozen Typhoon fighter jets could provide round-the-clock combat readiness in coordination with British and European peacekeeping forces.

A source in the Royal Air Force notes that this mission seems likely, but discussions are still at an early stage. If the decision is made, the aircraft will be based at Polish airfields near the border, which will allow them to quickly reach the battlefield.

Until 2022, British Typhoons have already flown over Ukraine during the Cossack Mace 2021 exercise, which took place at the 235th Interspecies Training Centre for Military Units.
