Hyundai IONIQ 5 N TA Spec set a record among electric cars at a race track in Japan
The Hyundai IONIQ 5 N achieved the best lap time among electric cars at the Attack Tsukuba 2025 road race in Japan on 15 February, with a lap time of 57.446 seconds. This result is almost two seconds faster than the nearest competitor among electric cars, despite the fact that the IONIQ 5 N TA Spec uses mostly commercially available components in critical systems such as motors, battery and control electronics.
Here's What We Know
The race track is located at the famous Tsukuba circuit in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. It is known for its compact and challenging layout, giving competitors the opportunity to unleash the cars' full potential. Team Hyundai N entered the event with the IONIQ 5 N TA (Time Attack) Spec, driven by Japanese professional racing driver Nobuteru Taniguchi.
The IONIQ 5 N TA Spec is a racing version of the production IONIQ 5 N. This electric vehicle previously won and set a record at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb 2024 in the modified production electric SUV category.
The vehicle is designed to showcase the strengths of the production specification IONIQ 5 N without significant modifications. The IONIQ 5 N TA Spec retains the power electronics system of the standard car. Through software tuning, the TA Spec's maximum power output has been increased to 687bhp and the rear motor output has been increased by 37bhp compared to the standard IONIQ 5 N.
Additional upgrades include the N Active Sound+ system with modified speakers (over 120dB), new shock absorbers, racing-grade brakes, 18-inch Yokohama ADVAN 005 slicks, high downforce aerodynamic package, Recaro Pro Racer SPA Hans seat, Sabelt Hans six-point seat belts, PPIHC specification safety cage and an electric vehicle fire suppression system.
