Apple has decided to use OLED displays instead of the old LCD displays in its new iPhone 16e models.

Here's What We Know

With the release of the iPhone 16e, Apple no longer produces the old iPhone SE models that had LCD displays. This means that now all new iPhones Apple sells are equipped with OLED displays.

Apple started introducing OLED displays in 2017, when the iPhone X was introduced. For several years, the company released models with a combination of OLED and LCD technologies, but in 2020, Apple abandoned LCD in its flagship models, and since then, all iPhone 12 and later models have OLED displays.

The iPhone SE model has always been positioned as a budget option based on the design of the iPhone 8, which had an LCD display. However, with the release of the iPhone 16e, the company finally switched to OLED technology even in the affordable segment.

Apple calls its OLED displays "Super Retina XDR", which offer improved contrast, brighter colours, better brightness, and higher resolution than LCD. OLED displays support HDR, which is a significant achievement for a budget model.

The iPhone 16e has a display similar to the iPhone 14 with a maximum brightness of 800 nits and a peak HDR of 1200 nits. This is slightly lower than the iPhone 16, which offers a maximum brightness of 1000 nits and a peak HDR of 1600 nits.

Users who purchase the new iPhone 16e will have to download a software update to get the latest version of iOS 18 immediately after unboxing the device.
