Former PlayStation CEO Shuhei Yoshida spoke about the reasons for the closure of Japan Studio, noting that the market has become "very difficult" for this type of game.

Here's What We Know

In an interview with the Sacred Symbols podcast, Yoshida, who left PlayStation after 30 years of work, stressed that the closure of Japan Studio was due to changes in the market. He noted that Sony had shifted its focus to big AAA games, and the studio's smaller projects failed to find success.

"During my tenure, I was not able to succeed with service games and I was not able to secure successful projects from Japan other than Gran Turismo," he explained. "The big games got bigger, indie games filled the gap, and the AA market seems to have disappeared."

Japan Studio was closed on 1 April 2021 as part of a reorganisation. Most of the studio's employees were laid off after their contracts were not renewed. Some of them later created new studios and projects.

Although in fact, if AA games are properly promoted, they will sell well, but this is a question for managers and it is a pity that Japan Studio was closed.
