Tesla Cybertruck crash test: electric pickup gets five NHTSA stars
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has given the Tesla Cybertruck electric pickup truck the highest overall safety rating of five stars.
Here's What We Know
The tests were conducted in December 2024 by Applus IDIADA KARCO Engineering in California using the 2024 Tesla Cybertruck Cyberbeast. According to the multi-page report, a frontal impact at 35 mph (56 km/h) demonstrated "100 per cent windscreen retention and no penetration of the protected windscreen area". It is also noted that both driver and passenger side doors remained closed during the impact and remained operable after the collision.
Although the driver and passenger knee airbags did not deploy, Tesla representatives said that this was "inherent in the design for this particular test configuration." However, the frontal airbags deployed properly, protecting the driver and passenger dummies.
The pole side impact test showed no significant deviations and the side airbags deployed as expected. The side impact test with a movable deformable barrier also showed no notable issues.
It's worth noting that the Cybertruck isn't the only electric pickup truck to receive a five-star rating from the NHTSA. The Ford F-150 Lightning also has the highest safety rating. The Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, GMC Hummer EV and Rivian R1T have not yet been evaluated under NHTSA standards.
