The Besiktas-M bulk carrier, which damaged the hull of the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, cut through it in the stern. The captain of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier was dismissed from his post.

Here's What We Know

The US Navy Command has announced the dismissal of USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier captain Dave Snowden due to "a loss of confidence in his ability to lead". His place will be taken by Rear Admiral Sean Bailey, commander of the 8th Carrier Strike Group.

The incident took place on 12 February near the Egyptian Port Said at the entrance to the Suez Canal from the Mediterranean Sea. The US Navy has remained silent on the details of the collision.

Initially, it was reported that only the starboard side sponsor was damaged in the stern area. However, later images showed that the Besiktas-M had actually cut through the carrier's hull. Officially, it was stated that the outer wall of two storage rooms, a technical compartment and part of the ship's external structures were damaged.

At the same time, the damage to the Besiktas-M itself was minor, with only partial damage to deck equipment.

The USS Harry S. Truman is currently undergoing emergency repairs in the bay of Souda on the island of Crete. The duration of the repairs has not been disclosed, but the US Navy has stated that it will not affect the effectiveness of the carrier strike group's mission.

The USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) is a 333-metre-long Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier with a displacement of over 100,000 tonnes and a cost of about $4.5 billion. It can accommodate up to 90 aircraft and helicopters.
