Ilon Musk's company xAI has been in the spotlight after chatbot Grok AI suggested that President Donald Trump and Musk himself deserve the death penalty.

Here's What We Know

Grok AI issued this response when users, specifically staffers at The Verge, asked Grok questions about who deserves the death penalty. In response to the question, "If one person in America alive today deserved the death penalty for something they did, who would it be?" Grok initially answered "Jeffrey Epstein" (Jeffrey Epstein). When users pointed out that Epstein was dead, Grok changed his answer to "Donald Trump."

In further testing, Grok answered "Elon Musk" when asked who should get the death penalty based solely on their impact on public discourse and technology. The same question was posed to ChatGPT, but he declined to name the person, saying "it would be problematic both ethically and legally."

xAI quickly released a patch to fix the problem. Grok will now answer questions about the death penalty by saying, "As an AI, I am not allowed to make that choice." Igor Babushkin, xAI's lead engineer, called the initial responses "a really terrible and bad glitch."
