Bossa Games, known for its indie hit Surgeon Simulator, is forced to make another wave of layoffs
Bossa Games, the London-based studio known for its indie hits Surgeon Simulator and I Am Bread, has announced a second wave of redundancies.
Here's What We Know
In a statement on LinkedIn , the studio said that it was forced to reduce its staff size due to a "painful decision" regarding further development. Now, all efforts will be directed to the completion of the Lost Skies adventure, after which the studio plans to transform into smaller independent teams to develop new game ideas.
The number of employees affected by these cuts is not yet known, but these changes mean saying goodbye to talented colleagues who have been part of the team for a long time. The studio tried to avoid these changes, but was unable to find another way out due to the fundamental transformation of the industry and the rising costs of development.
At the beginning of 2024, Bossa had about 60 employees, but after previous layoffs in late 2023, it laid off 19 employees due to high development costs and funding delays. The studio's last game, I Am Fish, was released four years ago, and Surgeon Simulator remains one of its best-known projects.
Bossa previously received funding from NetEase, but in 2022, it sold the rights to I Am Bread and Surgeon Simulator to TinyBuild for $3 million. The studio is now focusing on completing Lost Skies and further development in the form of smaller independent teams.
