The roguelike poker game Balatro has successfully appealed against the PEGI's decision to assign it an 18+ rating and is now classified as suitable for players aged 12 and older.

Here's What We Know

The rating was changed after a successful appeal. PEGI noted that although the game explains poker combinations, it contains fantasy elements that justify a 12+ rating. Earlier, the game was temporarily withdrawn from sale in some countries due to the mistaken belief that it contained gambling imagery.

The game's developer has previously expressed dissatisfaction with the PEGI's decision, considering it unequal compared to other games with similar themes but lower ratings. PEGI now plans to develop more detailed criteria for classifying games with gambling themes to avoid similar situations in the future.

Balatro has been a significant success, selling over 5 million copies. The game gained popularity after its release on mobile devices and winning the Best Indie Game category at The Game Awards.
