The Volkswagen ID.4 has made an unexpected leap in sales, becoming the third most popular electric car in the US in January 2025 - just behind the Tesla Model Y and Model 3. After a prolonged drop in sales due to the recall, the model returned to the market and showed an increase of 653% compared to January 2024.

Here's What We Know

Last month, Volkswagen sold 4,979 units of the ID.4 in the U.S. By comparison, the German brand sold just 646 ID.4 vehicles in the fourth quarter and just over 17,000 for the entire 2024 year. If the trend continues, sales of the electric crossover could reach nearly 60,000 by the end of 2025.

Cox Automotive estimates the Top 5 most popular electric car models in January were:

  1. Tesla Model
  2. Tesla Model 3
  3. Volkswagen ID.4
  4. Tesla Cybertruck
  5. Honda Prologue

In total, more than 102,200 electric vehicles were sold in the US in January, up nearly 30 per cent from January 2024. Tesla doesn't provide sales figures, so exact numbers won't be known until registrations are released.

The refreshed Volkswagen ID.4 RWD Pro 2025 entry-level model is priced from $45,095, while the AWD Pro is priced from $48,995. Both versions are powered by an 82 kWh battery pack. Volkswagen said a 62 kWh battery will be available for the ID.4 later this year.
