According to Circana analyst Matt Piscatella, more than 40% of the time spent playing PlayStataion 5 and Xbox Series X/S games in the US over the past month was spent on the top 10 most popular service games, such as Fortnite or Roblox.

Here's What We Know

These games not only attracted a large audience but also managed to retain players for a long time. More than 70% of active PlayStataion 5 and Xbox Series X/S users in the US played at least one of these games in January.

Matt also noted that such a high level of popularity of service games can be problematic for developers and publishers of other games, as the overall video game market in the US peaked in 2021, and the number of players and hours spent is not growing.

Piscatella emphasises that new products such as the Switch 2 and upcoming AAA titles could help reverse this trend. However, service games continue to play a significant role for players, especially with their $0 price point and constant updates. According to Newzoo, five legacy games - Fortnite, GTA V, League of Legends, Minecraft, and Roblox - took up more than 27% of all play time in 2023.
