Chinese scientists have proposed to equip four-legged combat robots with thermobaric weapons that are second only to nuclear weapons in terms of power. This, in their opinion, should increase efficiency in urban battles.

Here's What We Know

The idea of arming robotic dogs with thermobaric weapons arose after the People's Liberation Army of China conducted exercises. During these manoeuvres, unmanned vehicles with light weapons were used to clear buildings and bunkers. Scientists from the National University of Defence Technology of China believe that more powerful means should be used to break through fortified positions.

Dense GPS interference and electromagnetic interference in modern cities have also become a serious problem for traditional weapons systems. Therefore, scientists propose that weapons of mass destruction, which are second only to nuclear weapons in terms of lethality, should be used in battles in large cities.

The "robot dogs" would serve as assault units, as thermobaric weapons, also called "vacuum bombs," are capable of destroying buildings and inflicting significant damage on enemy manpower. In fact, scientists from the National University of Defence Technology have described thermobaric weapons as "mini-nuclear", but without radiation.

During the explosion, aerosol clouds of gas, liquid or powdered explosives are dispersed. They are powerful enough to destroy a building or wipe out a group of enemies.

Due to their destructive power, such munitions are ethically controversial, as their use can lead to high civilian casualties.
