The administration of US President Donald Trump has made it unequivocally clear that it wants to keep the presence of TikTok in the country. One of the scenarios considered is the sale of the Chinese social network from the company ByteDance to one of the American buyers. Potentially it could be Elon Musk, but so far the legal status of TikTok remains uncertain and competitors are seeking to take advantage of this, and as short videos are gaining popularity, the demand for relevant applications is growing.

Here's What We Know

According to sources of The Information portal, Meta may release a separate app from Instagram for viewing Reels - an analogue of short videos from TikTok.

The publication claims that Instagram chief Adam Mosseri this week notified employees about the potential separation of Instagram into a platform for photos and Reels - a platform for short videos.

At this point, however, Meta has yet to finalise the release of such an app. The decision will probably be made based on how the situation around TikTok develops. Obviously, if the Chinese social network does pull out of the US, it would be an ideal opportunity for Instagram to promote a new app.
