The NHL and Apple are working together to give referees at games a special Apple Watch. These watches have an app that helps referees during the game.

Here's What We Know

With the app, referees will receive important notifications directly to the watch by syncing it with the NHL's system called Oasis. This allows referees to receive updates without being distracted from the game.

The app allows referees to keep track of the match time and receive notifications of important events without having to look at video screens. The system uses haptic feedback to indicate key moments, such as when a player leaves the penalty area or when a period ends. Different haptic signals allow referees to easily distinguish between different notifications without looking at the screen.

Apple Watches used during NHL games will be provided by the league. Referees will be able to choose between the Apple Watch Ultra or Series 10 models. Since 2017, the NHL has been using Apple products in the training process and for analytics, as well as for watching games in real time.

This is not the first time Apple has collaborated with sports leagues: in 2023, Apple Watch was chosen as the official gadget for the World Surf League, which used the watch to display scores, wave priority, and time of competition stages.
