The animated film Flow, directed by Gints Zilbalodis, won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, becoming the first film from Latvia to win this award.

Here's What We Know

Flow is a post-apocalyptic story without dialogue, created using the free Blender software. The plot centres on a black cat who, together with a dog, a capybara, a lemur and a bird, tries to survive a catastrophic flood. The film impresses with its visual aesthetics and ability to convey emotions through music, movement and editing.

"I believe that you can say much more without words. Music, sound and movement allow you to convey what cannot be expressed in words," said Zilbalodis after the ceremony.

This is only Zilbalodis' second animated film as a director. Flow's victory was an important moment for Latvia: it is the first Latvian film to be nominated for an Oscar. In addition, the film was nominated in the Best International Film category.

Zilbalodis thanked his team and family: "Thank you to my parents, cats and dogs. This award is a huge honour for us and all independent animators."

Flow beat out such strong competitors as Inside Out 2, The Wild Robot, and the plasticine projects of Wallace Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl and Memoir of a Snail.
