Maserati MC20 sets driverless speed record: 318 km/h on autopilot

The Maserati MC20 has set a new world speed record for autonomous cars, hitting 197.7 mph (318.16 km/h) on the runway at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Here's What We Know
The record-breaking run took place during the 1000 Miglia Experience Florida event. The driverless car travelled the 2.8-mile (4.5 km) runway and surpassed the previous record of 192.8 mph (310.28 km/h).
The project was developed by Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC) in conjunction with Politecnico di Milano. They modified the Maserati MC20 with an AI pilot and a new robotic control system.
The previous record of 177mph belonged to an MC20-based race car built by the Indy Autonomous Challenge. It was set in November last year.

Despite the records, Maserati has fallen on hard times. In 2024, the brand's sales fell 60 per cent to 11,300 cars.
