DXOMARK has introduced a new Smart Choice award to help users identify smartphones with the best balance between price and camera quality. This is an initiative for those who want to get the best possible experience without spending too much.

Here's What We Know

In 2024, the company tested 50 smartphone models, from budget to ultra-premium (from $800 and above). The tests showed that the most noticeable progress in the quality of mobile cameras is observed in the mid-range and premium segments ($400-$800). Smartphones from these categories are now almost as good as flagships in terms of photo and video quality.

That's why DXOMARK decided to mark models that meet or exceed the average level of the next price segment for the previous year in terms of camera performance. This way, it will be easier for consumers to find out which devices give the most for their price.

Here's How It Works

To receive the Smart Choice award, a smartphone's camera must demonstrate performance comparable to that of a more expensive segment over the past year. This is a kind of "quality seal" that guarantees customers the long-term value of the device. The chart below shows the minimum camera scores (marked in blue) that a smartphone will need to achieve in 2025 to receive the DXOMARK Smart Choice award in its price segment. The black bars show the average camera score for each price segment in 2024.

Key points:

  • Essential (<$200): To receive the award in 2025, a smartphone must score at least 86 points.
  • Advanced ($200-400): The minimum passing score is 125.
  • High-End ($400-600): Smartphones in this class must get 139 or more.
  • Premium ($600-800): You need to score at least 150 points.
  • Ultra-Premium (>$800): This segment is not eligible for the Smart Choice award because it is the highest priced and there is no higher end to compare it to.

Bottom line.

DXOMARK's Smart Choice initiative gives consumers a guideline for choosing a smartphone that offers a top-of-the-line camera without the extra cost. This is a useful step in a market where manufacturers are constantly increasing prices without always offering a noticeable increase in quality.
