The German defence concern Rheinmetall plans to start repairing infantry fighting vehicles, tanks and artillery pieces in Ukraine.

What is known

The company's CEO Armin Papperger said that a logistics route is currently being developed to ensure fast delivery of spare parts to the repair centre.

Thus, the following vehicles will be repaired in Ukraine: Marder armoured personnel carriers, Leopard 1 and Leopard 2 armoured personnel carriers, and Panzerhaubitze 2000 artillery systems. According to Papperger, the repair work should begin in a few months.

Previously, German equipment had to be taken abroad to be serviced. In particular, Lithuania has been repairing Panzerhaubitze 2000s in cooperation with Rheinmetall.

Ukrainian Leopard 2s were also repaired in Lithuania at Lithuania Defence Services (LDS), which Rheinmetall and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann opened in June 2022.

That is why the launch of the repair centre in Ukraine will greatly simplify the maintenance of military equipment and speed up its return to the battlefield.
