Tencent acquires additional shares in FromSoftware's parent company: the Chinese giant increases its stake in Kadokawa to 7.97%

The Chinese giant Tencent, the largest investor in the video game industry, has increased its stake in the Japanese corporation Kadokawa to 7.97%. Kadokawa is the parent company of FromSoftware, the developer of the cult Souls games.

According to Nikkei, Tencent acquired an additional 1.11% of Kadokawa shares. This allows the company to strengthen its position among Kadokawa's shareholders, second only to Sony, which owns 10% of the shares.
Tencent first invested in Kadokawa in 2021, acquiring a 6.86% stake for $264 million.
Sony has remained Kadokawa's largest shareholder since acquiring a 10% stake in January 2025. In addition, Sony owns 14% of FromSoftware directly.
Kadokawa is an important player in the media world with its numerous IPs in anime, manga, and video games. Its collaboration with Tencent and Sony aims to expand its global presence by adapting content for international markets.
