Sony has unexpectedly made an update for the PlayStation 3, releasing firmware version 4.92. Despite the fact that the console has long been out of sale, the company continues to support it with updates.

Here's What We Know

The update, which became available on 5 March 2025, focuses on improving system performance. The main changes include:

  • Updating the Blu-ray player encryption keys to ensure compatibility with modern discs.
  • General system stability improvements.

The update requires at least 200 MB of free space on your PS3 hard drive or external storage to install via PC.

Although the PlayStation 3 has been considered a "retro console" since the release of the PS4 in 2013, it remains an important part of the history of the gaming industry.

The console, which was released in 2006, was revolutionary with its support for Blu-ray discs, HDMI port, and 1080p output.

Although the PS3 no longer receives significant functional updates, Sony continues to maintain its basic functionality and security, allowing owners to enjoy gaming and multimedia capabilities even years after it ceased production.
