Vehicle-to-Home feature coming to the Kia EV9: you can connect an entire home
Kia's EV9 electric SUV in the US will soon get a Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) feature that will allow its battery to be used to power a home during power outages or periods of high rates.
Here's What We Know
The Kia EV9 has a high-voltage battery (76.1 or 99.8 kWh), and when fully charged, it can:
- power a home for 3 days (small battery, based on 25 kWh of consumption per day);
- up to 4 days on the large battery.
In addition to emergency power, you can save on electricity by charging your car at night when electricity is cheaper, and then use the stored energy during the day when rates are high.
What's required to do this?
Just plugging a cable into your Kia and switching on the toaster in the kitchen won't work. You need to buy the Wallbox Quasar 2 bi-directional charger. It's already available for pre-order.
The Quasar 2 supports:
- Power at Home (V2H)
- Power to the grid (V2G)
- Solar panel charging
- Dynamic load control
Maximum power:
- 12.48 kW (AC) / 12.8 kW (DC)
The Wallbox kit includes the Quasar 2 bi-directional charger directly and a device called the Power Recovery Unit at a cost of $6,440 (excluding installation fees). According to the EVSE vendor, the kit is eligible for a tax credit of up to $1,000. Pre-orders are currently limited to residents of California, Texas, Florida, New York, Washington, D.C., New Jersey and Illinois.
Quasar 2 deliveries will begin in June 2025.
