The UK Ministry of Defence plans to purchase additional M270 MLRS launchers and repair and recovery vehicles for them, despite the possible risks associated with dependence on US arms supplies.

Here's What We Know

Amid discussions about Europe's dependence on US arms, the UK Ministry of Defence is considering purchasing 15 M270 MLRS launchers and one RRV from the US. These plans will add to the existing 61 M270 MLRS and eight RRVs in service with the British Armed Forces.

In addition, the British defence budget provides £800 million over 10 years for the purchase of GMLRS guided missiles and new GMLRS-ER missiles with a range of up to 150 km. The specific number of purchases remains classified for security reasons.

The UK Secretary of State for Defence, Maria Eagle, confirmed these plans in response to a parliamentary inquiry, but noted that the decision to purchase the M270 and RRV is only at the conceptual stage.

The British share in the production and maintenance of M270 and RRV is 6%, which allows the country to participate in the modernisation of long-haul systems. This may be a factor that gives London a sense of security against possible restrictions from the US.

However, the extent to which these expectations are justified will only become clear if the contract for the delivery of the new M270 MLRS and RRV is actually signed.
