Toyota has unveiled the updated bZ4X, which gets new batteries, increased power and faster charging. This is the first major upgrade to the model since its debut in 2022.

Here's What We Know

One of the key changes was the introduction of two battery options. Buyers can now choose between 57.7 kWh for the front-wheel-drive version or 73.1 kWh, which is available in both FWD- and all-wheel-drive (AWD) variants. The range depends on the configuration: with the smaller battery, the bZ4X will be able to travel around 450 kilometres, while the top-end 73.1 kWh version promises up to 573 kilometres on the WLTP cycle.

Along with the batteries, Toyota has updated the electric motors. The power of the front-wheel drive version with the smaller battery is 167 hp, while the 73.1 kWh version produces 224 hp. But the protagonist here is the all-wheel drive version, which gets an additional electric motor on the rear axle, increasing the total power to 343 hp. This not only makes the bZ4X AWD more dynamic, but it can now tow up to 1,500kg, twice as much as before.

Configurations of the updated Toyota bZ4X:

  • front-wheel drive, 57.7 kWh battery, 167 hp (123 kW);
  • front-wheel drive, 73.1 kWh battery, 224 hp (165 kW);
  • all-wheel drive, 73.1 kWh battery, 343 hp (252 kW).

Charging speed was also another highlight of the update. For the first time, a 22 kW on-board charger will be available for the model, which will significantly speed up AC charging. However, the bZ4X still supports up to 150 kW at fast DC stations. To optimise charging in cold weather, the new version has been given a battery pre-warming function.

What other innovations are there?

Visually, the updated bZ4X has also undergone changes. The front end has become more elegant and aerodynamic, which not only refreshes the look of the car, but also reduces aerodynamic drag, positively affecting energy consumption. The cabin gets a new centre console that makes it easier to use digital devices, as well as an updated 14-inch multimedia system with support for over-the-air updates. In addition, noise and vibration isolation of the crossover's interior has been improved.

Another technological novelty is smart navigation, which automatically selects charging stations along the route based on the battery level and optimises stops for recharging.

When on sale?

The updated Toyota bZ4X will go on sale in Europe in autumn 2025. Around the same time, sales of the Toyota Urban Cruiser compact electric crossover will begin.
