Official confirmation has emerged that the popular mobile game Pokemon GO and several other games from Niantic studio have a new owner.

Here's What We Know

Niantic has just issued a press release confirming details of a major deal that sees Pokemon GO, Pikmin Bloom, and Monster Hunter Now sold to Scopely, the creator of Monopoly GO.

The total value of the deal is $3.85bn. The acquisition includes not only the games, but also the studios that developed and support them.

Quote from the press release:

We have reached an agreement under which Scopely, a global leader in mobile gaming, will acquire Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloom, Monster Hunter Now and the incredible teams working on these games. The total value of the deal to Niantic shareholders will be approximately $3.85 billion.

Scopely's focus on creating and operating amazing live-service games, unique experience with some of the largest and most valuable intellectual property in the world, and care for the gaming community and development teams makes the company a perfect fit for our projects. Our games team has exciting long-term plans that they will continue to develop as part of Scopely. This partnership ensures our games have the long-term support they need to become "timeless games" that will be relevant for generations to come. Players can expect that the games, apps, services and events they know and love will continue to receive ongoing investment from Scopely, managed by the same teams that have always created these opportunities.

Flashback

Pokemon GO, which debuted almost 10 years ago, was the first truly popular augmented reality game. It offered to search for Pokémon on real city streets, in parks, and sometimes it even went as far as churches.

Every day tens of millions of players hunt for Pokémon in their neighbourhoods, and recently Monster Hunter Now offers a similar entertainment, but for fans of the famous Capcom franchise.

As a reminder, Scopely, the company that acquired Niantic games, is wholly owned by Savvy Games Group, an organisation created by the Saudi Arabian Sovereign Fund in 2021, which is dedicated to the development of the gaming industry in the country.
