Sonos has abandoned plans to launch its own set-top box, The Verge reports. The company has officially stopped developing this product, and the employees who worked on it have been transferred to other projects.

Here's What We Know

This digital media player, internally called Pinewood, could have become a key Sonos product in the second half of 2025. Its development was almost complete, and it was even beta-tested for several months. However, acting CEO Tom Conrad decided to change the company's strategy, refusing to enter the video streaming market.

Sonos planned to compete with Apple TV and other media players by offering a device costing from $200 to $400. It was expected to be a compact black set-top box with an attractive Android-based interface that would support Netflix, Disney Plus, Max, and other services.

The main feature of the device was supposed to be an HDMI switch that would allow connecting game consoles, soundbars, and other devices without delays. This was supposed to solve the long-standing problem of sound synchronisation that bothered Sonos users.

Instead of entering the video streaming market, the company will focus on improving its software after an unsuccessful app update last year.

In January, it became known that the CEO of Sonos resigned after a failed app redesign. Sonos shares fell by 13% after the update was released. Tom Conrad, a board member and former Snap and Pandora executive, was appointed interim CEO.
