Google has officially confirmed that later in 2025, Gemini will completely replace Google Assistant on most Android devices. This decision is a logical extension of the latest updates to the model and the expansion of Gemini's capabilities, including the Deep Research feature for all users.

Here's What We Know

The company announced that "the classic Google Assistant will no longer be available on most mobile devices". It is expected that users will be informed of the exact date of the shutdown in advance.

In the coming months, users who are still using Assistant will be offered to upgrade to Gemini.

The only exceptions are devices running Android 9 or older, as well as those with less than 2 GB of RAM - Google Assistant will remain available for them.

Gemini is already installed by default on new Pixel, Samsung, OnePlus, and Motorola smartphones released over the past year. Google also notes that "millions of people have already switched to Gemini".

When Gemini launched in 2024, it had a limited set of features compared to Assistant, but Google has gradually added the ability to use the assistant on a locked screen and control the device through the Utilities menu.

Google confirmed that Gemini will appear not only on smartphones but also on smartwatches, cars, tablets, and headphones. Gemini has already replaced Assistant with Pixel Buds, and its integration into Wear OS is expected in the future. The company is also working on Gemini support for smart speakers, displays, and TVs.
