Huawei's HarmonyOS overtakes iOS in China

Huawei's HarmonyOS operating system has overtaken iOS in the Chinese market. According to Counterpoint Research, HarmonyOS holds 19% of the market, which is two percentage points more than iOS.
Here's What We Know
Android continues to dominate China with a 64% share in the fourth quarter of 2024.
Huawei has achieved this success ahead of an important event on 20 March 2025, when the company will unveil its first smartphone running the stable version of HarmonyOS NEXT. This is a significant step for Huawei, which has been able to overcome difficulties following US sanctions.
In addition to its success in software, Huawei has also taken a leading position in the Chinese smartphone market, gaining an 18.1% share in the fourth quarter of 2024. This is the first time in five years that the company has strengthened its position in its home market again. Sales growth was driven by the Nova 13 and Mate 70 series.

The popularity of HarmonyOS is expected to continue to grow thanks to government subsidies. The Chinese government provides a 500 yuan ($70) subsidy on smartphones costing up to 6,000 yuan (approximately $800) to support the economy.
Globally, however, the situation is different. Android holds the lead with a 74% share, while Apple increased its share from 16% to 22% in the fourth quarter of 2024. Huawei's global market share remained stable at 4%. The company's success in China could have a positive impact on its future prospects in the global market.
