FAW-Volkswagen has announced ambitious plans to expand its model range in China. Starting in 2026, the Volkswagen and Jetta brands will introduce 11 new vehicles adapted to the local market. These include six all-electric models, two PHEVs (plug-in hybrids) and two EREVs (electric cars with range extender).

Here's What We Know

The announcement took place in Wolfsburg during the signing of an agreement to extend the strategic partnership between Volkswagen and FAW (First Automotive Works). Of the 11 new products, 10 models fall under the Chinese New Energy Vehicles (NEV) category, meaning they have a partially or fully electrified powertrain. Only one model will be exclusively petrol-powered.

In even more interesting news, FAW-VW will launch two electric vehicles in the EREV format. These are cars that are always propelled by an electric motor, but have a small petrol engine that acts as a generator. This differentiates them from classic hybrids, where the internal combustion engine can directly turn the wheels. There are no details about these models yet, it is only known that they will be in the mid-size segment.

Technology and market

The new FAW-Volkswagen BEV and PHEV models will be built on the China Main Platform (CMP), developed specifically for the Chinese market. Another feature will be the use of China Electronic Architecture (CEA), which enables the integration of advanced digital services and advanced driver assistance systems.

Jetta, FAW and VW

Jetta has existed in China as a separate budget car brand since 2019. Until now, it has not had any electric models, but that will soon change.

FAW is Volkswagen's second-largest partner in China after SAIC and is already producing localised versions of electric cars based on the MEB platform, including the ID.4 Crozz and ID.6 Crozz.

New products debut

The first of 11 new FAW-Volkswagen models will be unveiled at Auto Shanghai 2025, which will be held from 23 April to 2 May.
