Half-Life 2 RTX demo released on Steam - system requirements are impressive

A trial version of the semi-official Half-Life 2 RTX remaster with support for ray tracing and other advanced technologies has been released on Steam.

Orbifold Studios team works on the project with technical support of Valve and NVIDIA.

Here's What We Know

Half-Life 2 RTX demo allows you to spend about two hours in the game and pass several levels. The project shows how the iconic 2004 game looks like with full ray tracing, global illumination, high-resolution textures, realistic reflections and updated assets.

All of this is made possible by NVIDIA's RTX Remix toolkit, which is essentially an AI. It automatically scans all objects in the game, improves their quality to the highest possible level, implements the above technologies and DLSS 4, and then the developers manually perfect the result. As a result, the game of 20 years ago is almost as good as modern novelties in graphics.

But to fully appreciate Half-Life 2 RTX demo version, you need a powerful computer, which should meet the following system requirements:

Minimum (low settings, 1080p at 30 fps with DLSS enabled)

  • Operating system: 64-bit Windows 10 or 11;
  • processor: Intel Core i7-8600 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600;
  • graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti;
  • RAM: 16 GB;
  • SSD space: 50 GB.

Recommended (high settings, 1080p at 60 fps with DLSS enabled)

  • Operating system: 64-bit Windows 10 or 11;
  • processor: Intel Core i7-10700 or AMD Ryzen 5 5600;
  • graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070;
  • RAM: 16 GB;
  • SSD space: 50GB.

Ultra (ultra settings, 4K at 144 fps with DLSS enabled)

  • operating system: 64-bit Windows 10 or 11;
  • processor: Intel Core i7-12700 or AMD Ryzen 7 7700X;
  • graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080;
  • RAM: 32 GB;
  • SSD space: 50 GB.

When We Can Expect It

The release date of the full Half-Life 2 RTX version is still unknown.

The remaster will be distributed as free DLC for the original Half-Life 2.
