Thousands of iPhones stolen from doorsteps during FedEx deliveries in the US

The US Department of Justice has recently uncovered the international criminal network Porch Pirate, which specialised in the theft of expensive gadgets, including iPhones.
Here's What We Know
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, 13 members of the network stole FedEx parcels with iPhones delivered to doorsteps across the country. The attackers used automated scripts to collect data from FedEx's tracking systems and bribed AT&T employees to pass on confidential customer information.
AT&T employees shared data such as names, addresses and tracking numbers. Some criminals sold this information, while others, known as "runners," physically stole the iPhone packages right after they were delivered.
The thefts took place in different US states. The Bronx and Brooklyn were the main points of receipt for stolen phones, and stolen devices were shipped abroad for sale. In one case, two criminals attempted to send a package with FedEx, claiming it contained children's clothes.
However, after FedEx security found stolen iPhones in the package, it was confiscated. When the package arrived empty, one of the men contacted FedEx customer service to report the theft.
FedEx and AT&T have been working with law enforcement to find all those involved in the criminal scheme. FedEx stated that it is actively working with law enforcement to combat "doorstep theft". AT&T confirmed that it is constantly improving its processes and employee training to prevent such crimes.
All members of the criminal group have been charged, and some of them could face up to 20 years in prison.
