Helldivers 2 CEO: video game industry is stuck in a "vicious cycle of death and rebirth"

Johan Pylestedt, creative director of Helldivers 2, expressed concern about the current state of the video game industry, noting that it is in a "vicious cycle of death and rebirth". He emphasised that regular mass layoffs and instability have become commonplace, which has a negative impact on the industry.
Here's What We Know
During his speech at the GDC conference, Pylestedt noted that the video game industry often faces massive layoffs, which he considers to be the result of a lack of diversity in game development. He believes that developers and publishers are overly cautious, choosing "safe" projects, which leads to monotony and loss of player interest.
Pylestedt emphasised that the industry must take risks and innovate to avoid stagnation. He cited the example of Helldivers 2, which few people believed in its success at first, but thanks to an unconventional approach, the game gained popularity.
Johan also believes that "balance is a myth, and excessive attention to it makes the game uninteresting".
