Google has introduced the Pixel 9a, which offers many of the features of the Pixel 9 series, but at a more affordable price of $499. Although the Pixel 9a has the same display, chipset, and software, it has some limitations.

Here's What We Know

One of the main missing features is Satellite SOS, which is available on the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

Satellite SOS allows users to contact emergency services when there is no access to Wi-Fi or mobile data.

Google confirmed to Android Authority that the Pixel 9a does not support this feature. This is likely due to the use of the older Exynos Modem 5300 modem found in the Pixel 8 series, instead of the newer Exynos Modem 5400 as found in other Pixel 9 models.

Not only is the Exynos Modem 5400 more efficient, but it also supports 3GPP Release 17, which allows you to connect to satellites in low Earth orbit. This is important for 5G networks using satellites (NTN). Thanks to this, Pixel 9 and its models support Satellite SOS and satellite notifications, which are not available in Pixel 9a. Satellite messaging allows Pixel 9 users on Verizon and T-Mobile to send text messages even when they don't have mobile coverage.

While Starlink's satellite messaging service can work on the Pixel 9a, it requires special hardware to fully support satellite communications. It is unknown whether Google would have included Satellite SOS even if the Pixel 9a had a newer modem. However, the lack of this feature puts the Pixel 9a at a disadvantage compared to more expensive models and competitors.
