Sony Interactive Entertainment has recently filed a new patent for a PlayStation controller that can be charged using solar energy, which could solve the problem with batteries.

PlayStation controller powered by solar energy

Here's What We Know

According to Tech4Gamers, the patent titled "Operation Device" describes a controller that has "a plurality of photovoltaic cells" on the body and a storage area to accumulate the energy generated by these cells. The resulting energy then charges the device.

Diagrams provided in the patent show that the photovoltaic cells would be located on the top of the controller, around the analogue joysticks and buttons. Such a controller can be placed under sunlight to charge.

Sony noted that a conventional controller requires a replaceable or rechargeable battery. With the new patent, the company wants to solve this problem by allowing the controller's battery to be charged through an external energy source, such as sunlight.
